Hastelloy: ideal for extreme environments

Hastelloys from Alloy Wire International are a range of a high-performance nickel-based alloys that are known for their excellent resistance to corrosion and high temperature. Hastelloy alloys are nickel based that have been alloyed with primarily molybdenum and chromium to allow for the increased corrosion resistance. Other alloying elements also feature in various amounts such as cobalt, iron, tungsten meaning each alloy performs slightly differently depending on application requirements.

As a result, these alloys have found uses in several sectors, such as petrochemical, marine, and aerospace.

Providing excellent corrosion resistance

Hastelloy alloys are proven to be extremely reliable in multiple environments, thanks to a combination of corrosion resistance, high temperature strength, weldability and versatility. As a result, this has ensured these are proven materials for the following applications:

  • Power Generation: Hastelloy alloys are used in gas turbines, heat exchangers, and boiler components that work at high temperatures and in corrosive environments.
  • Chemical processing: Thanks to its excellent corrosion resistance, we are often asked to provide Hastelloy alloys for chemical reactors, piping systems, vessels, and other equipment involved in the production and processing of chemicals.
  • Pharmaceutical: Due to their resistance to corrosive chemicals and sterilisation methods, Hastelloy has proven to be a critical alloy for manufacturing and handling pharmaceutical products.
  • Pollution control: Hastelloy alloys are often found in waste treatment plants and desulfurisation systems, thanks to their resistance to corrosive gases and acidic environments.
  • Petrochemicals: In harsh environments featuring corrosive substances, such as refineries and petrochemical plants, Hastelloy alloys are found in equipment such as heat exchangers, valves, pumps, and piping systems.
  • Aerospace and Defence: These alloys are often found in aircraft engines and gas turbine components, as they are able to retain their strength in high-temperature environments, as well as their exceptional corrosion resistance.
