Valve World Review Back to top

On Alloy Wire’s exhibition stand at this year’s Valve World in Dusseldorf, Germany were Stephen Olley and Angus Hogarth from the company’s headquarters in the U.K., plus Steve Parton, Michael Sonntag and Eva Lorenz from the company’s offices for Germany, France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland.

The visitor attendance to the event was over 12000 and the comment from the many meetings held on the Alloy Wire stand was that the year 2017 may well see an upturn in the oil and gas sector.

“AWI has had a fantastic year in 2016 said Stephen Olley (Sales Executive), which is excellent when so many sectors are “going steady”,and we are in a great position to be able to respond quickly to any upsurge because we carry such a very large amount of stock. Having the stock is not enough though; our very efficient wire processing structure enables us to manufacture this stock into a customer’s order specification within 2 weeks, continued Stephen”

The exhibition was another success for Alloy Wire, where they had many meetings with long standing customers and potential new ones, from countries as local as Germany, France, Italy, The Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia….to further afield like China, India….

Thanks to everyone who came to see us!

Stainless steel wire is special to AWI Back to top

AWI is receiving record demand for high quality stainless steel that is of European origin and/or DFARS compliant.

The company offers a selection of 18 different grades and these are all available in special diameter tolerances, special tensile strength ranges, special surface finishes and special packaging.

Interest has come from customers in a range of sectors, including aerospace, nuclear, marine and petrochemical, with many citing the firm’s AS9100 accreditation and its on-time delivery record as key reasons for the enquiry.

“Manufacturing quality, delivering reliability is one of our founding principles and one that still rings true today with our global customer base,” commented Natalie Baker (Sales Executive).

“We have an extensive range of stainless steel grades and our stock levels mean we can provide it in any quantity from ¼ kg to 50kg in just two weeks. Our manufacturing capability is equally as impressive and we are more than happy to produce wire as small as 0.025mm (that’s 2 times smaller than a human hair) and as large as 21mm. Applications can be as diverse as ‘Locking’ wire for aircraft engines to stainless steel wire for cutting honeycomb from a beehive.

“In addition, if you are manufacturing machined components and don’t want your wire on spools or in coils, we can provide your stainless steel in straight bars.”

The below stainless steel grades are manufactured in round wire, flat wire and profile/shaped wire and delivered via express air courier all over the world. AWI’s service is so special that, for example, material can be in a customer’s factory anywhere in North America within 2 days of shipping!

Bigger – in profile wire Back to top

Significant investment by AWI in new machinery has given it the capacity to increase the size of the flat and shaped profiles it can now manufacture in more than 60 different alloys.

The installation of a custom-built production line makes it possible for the company to offer its customers access to wider and thinner or bigger cross-section profile (up to 100mm2), as well as offering them the chance to purchase in quantities ranging from as small as 10 metres to as large as 1000kg. Better still, this can be delivered within 4 weeks to any client, in any country.

“We are continually talking to our customers and finding out what would make their life easier,” explained Angus Hogarth, Sales Director at AWI.

“One of the main points they kept coming back on was being able to buy flat and shaped profiles in a wider variety of sizes, especially in bigger profiles. We listened and decided to commission a bespoke machine that could deliver just that and we’re already seeing significant orders placed that we perhaps would not have won before.”

He added: “This new profile equipment means we can also give customers larger and heavier reels/spools – up to 250Kg. We can even switch from spools/reels to the alternative packaging form of ‘Pancake’ coils for flat profiles.”

The dimensions achievable on the new finished profile range are dependent on the alloy and the width to thickness ratio of the flat or shaped profile.

Some example sizes, include:

  • 16 x 0.7mm
  • 13 x 1.6mm
  • 6 x 0.2mm
  • 0.400 x 0.250”
  • 0.312”sq
  • 10 x 0.35mm
  • 18 x 0.5mm
  • 9.0 x 5.08mm
  • 15 x 0.4mm

AWI’s range of materials is growing by the month and it currently has more than 60 available to choose from.

If it’s a flat or shaped profile that needs to survive very corrosive conditions there is the Hastelloy alloy range, the cobalt alloys ‘Phynox’ and ‘MP35N’. On the other hand, if your wire is going to be used in a high temperature component, the Inconel range, Incoloy or Nimonic alloys might be the preferred choice.

For less severe environments, but equally critical applications, other materials like AWI’s range of 18 stainless steel grades are available and all governed by AMS, ASTM and ISO 9001 standards.

Angus concluded: “Quality is crucial to everything we do and our technical and inspection departments ensure our clients receive the very best product. In order to keep up with enquiries from the aerospace and defence sector, we have also secured the AS9100 accreditation.

“Our profiles are used for aircraft engine retaining rings to architectural grills, whilst some of our spring making customers use our wider flat wire for stamping out parts”.

Alloy Wire International hails best ever ‘Wire 2016’ with hundreds of new enquiries Back to top

The management team of one of the UK's leading manufacturers of round, flat, shaped profile and electrical resistance wire has hailed 'Wire Dusseldorf 2016' the best yet.

Alloy Wire International saw more than 250 serious enquiries during the five-day show, with interest for its extending range of Exotic Nickel alloys coming from all corners of the globe, including Australia, Japan, the US and Europe.

They came from customers in the automotive, aerospace, defence, medical and nuclear sectors, with oil and gas the only sector showing small signs of depression.

Mark Venables, Managing Director of Alloy Wire, explained: 'Wire 2016 was definitely the biggest and the best yet in terms of getting so many quality suppliers, customers and agents together in one venue.

'This is our premier show of the year and this is reflected in the level of investment we have put in to creating a high profile presence and the fact we have many of our international agents here to build relationships and talk to visitors.'

He continued: 'Enquiries came from all over the world and having a vast array of our colleagues on hand was great to help interpret and translate conversations. The exchange of thoughts and ideas flowed freely and I’m sure will lead to orders.'

Alloy Wire used Wire 2016 to launch its new technical brochure and its largest ever range of Exotic Nickel alloys, which offer high corrosion resistance properties and high temperature performance.

Over 50 different alloys – including the recently added Nitronic 50͋ (0.025 to 5.50mm) and Super Duplex (0.025 to 6.50mm) – were on display at the Brierley Hill firm’s new stand, which caused a lot of interest at the show.

Visitors were impressed with the sleek design, clean look and the 55' touchscreen that allows you to look at the history of the business, the markets it serves and the expanding product range.

Angus Hogarth, Sales Director, went on to add: 'The new stand really made an impression, with visitors saying it was one of the best they had seen at the show – some even requested pictures!

'Wire 2016 was also a great place to launch our new 82-page technical brochure, with 100 given away during the 5 days and another 150 requesting the publication to be sent in the post.'

He concluded: 'There was interest right across our product range, but perhaps most telling was informing companies that we now draw from 21mm in a lot of different alloys and can deliver within 3 weeks.'

Alloy Wire, which is celebrating its 70th year in business in 2016, has grown into one of the world’s leading providers of wire, supplying 4000 customers in 15 sectors.

An extensive stockholding of materials, ability to provide small batch quantities and 2 to 3 week lead times has seen its wire sold to more than 45 countries across the world.

Thank you to all our agents for their fantastic support at the show and thank you to all visitors who came onto our stand.
We look forward to seeing you at Wire 2018.

Alloy Wire to launch new products at Wire Dusseldorf 2016 Back to top

Alloy Wire is heading to Dusseldorf this week with its largest ever range of exotic Nickel alloys, as demand for intense corrosion properties and high temperature resistance reaches a new high.

The UK manufacturer of round, flat, shaped profile and electrical resistance wires will be showcasing more than 50 alloys at 'Wire Dusseldorf 2016', including the recently added Nitronic 50͋ (0.025 to 5.50mm) and Super Duplex (0.025 to 6.50mm).
According to the firm, these are ideally suited for the fastener; marine; paper and pulp; petroleum; petrochemical, and oil and gas sectors, and provide a myriad of benefits, including strong corrosion resistance and good mechanical properties at sub-zero temperatures.

The major international trade show will also give the company the opportunity to launch its new stand design and the eagerly awaited 90-page technical brochure, while providing industry delegates with an update on its £700,000 investment in new testing capabilities, spooling machines and specialist annealing furnaces.

Sales director at Alloy Wire International, Angus Hogarth explained: 'Wire Dusseldorf is coming at exactly the right time for our business and gives us a global platform to launch these new products and catch up with clients from all over the world.

'We have listened to what the sector wants and increased the starting diameter of a selection of alloys, such as Hastelloy C-22°; Inconel 625™; MP35N*; Nimonic 80A™; Haynes 282°, and Titanium Grade 5.'

He continued: 'This has seen us increase sales to £8m, including numerous new orders with fastener suppliers and spring makers looking for small batch quantities and exotic alloys.'

Alloy Wire, which will be in Hall 11/Stand E26, is celebrating its 70th year in business in 2016.

The company has grown into one of the world's leading providers of wire, supplying 4,000 customers in 15 sectors.
An extensive stockholding of materials, ability to provide small batch quantities and 2-3 week lead times has seen its wire sold to more than 45 countries across the world.

Hogarth concluded: 'There is a lot of competition in our sector, which is why we are continually looking at the way we service our clients. This could be through technical advice, increasing our range of wire or exploring innovations that can reduce lead times even further.

'Wire Dusseldorf is a really important show for us and we've set ourselves a £1m target for new sales.'

Happy Chinese New Year Back to top

The whole team here at Alloy Wire International would like to wish you good luck and happiness this Chinese New Year, the Year of the Monkey.

Alloy Wire Chairman named in The Manufacturer's Top 100 Back to top

The man affectionately known as 'Mr Alloy Wire' has been named as one of the most influential manufacturing personalities in the UK by a leading trade publication.

Chairman Bill Graham, who has been involved with the company since 1972, was announced in The Manufacturer's Top 100 at a recent event in Birmingham.

The high-profile list – sponsored by Autodesk, BDO and Lloyds Bank – recognises individuals who have made a major contribution to UK industry through innovation, skills development and helping to grow supply chain business.

Judges praised the former apprentice for his ability to steer Alloy Wire into one of the UK's most progressive SME manufacturers, exporting to more than 45 countries across the world.

They also singled out his determination to create an employee-owned company, where every member of staff owns part of the business. This has resulted in a 'unique and vibrant' working environment where absenteeism is close to zero and monthly bonuses are paid equally to all employees.

Bill commented: 'You never expect to be recognised for doing something you love, but to make it on such a prestigious list is a major honour for everyone associated with the company.

'We have always tried to do things a little bit differently at Alloy Wire and this has translated into strong growth. Manufacturing is a great sector to be involved in and hopefully that's reflected in the way we do business.'

Under Bill's leadership, the firm has grown to £8m of annual sales, supplying high quality drawn round wire, flat wire and shaped wire to customers working in automotive, aerospace, oil and gas, nuclear and rail.

As part of his recognition, the company will work hard to promote UK manufacturing and continue its efforts to encourage young people into industry.

The Scottish entrepreneur was joined in the Top 100 by some illustrious names, including Andrew Denford (Founder of F1 Schools), Christopher Nieper (MD of David Nieper) and Edward Naylor (CEO of Naylor Industries).
